Dr. Kevin White presents lecture on dry adhesive technology at the American Chemical Society’s National Meeting and Expo in Boston, MA. The lecture was part of a symposium on multi-functional nanomaterials held in honor of Professor Hung-Jue Sue’s 60th birthday.
AAI Chief Operating Officer and Principal Scientist, Dr. Kevin White, presented recent work on the development of ShearGrip nanofiber dry adhesives at the ACS National Meeting & Expo this summer. The conference, themed “Nanoscience, Nanotechnology & Beyond,” was held in Boston, Massachusetts. With over 16,000 attendees from all over the world, the ACS National meeting and Expo is an ideal event to network, and discover new research and technology.
Dr. White has attended several ACS functions over the years, and this year he helped coordinate a symposium to celebrate the 60th birthday of Professor Hung-Jue Sue. His involvement included chairing several lectures, as well as presenting a lecture of his own, based on the development of ShearGrip.
The lecture was titled, “Structure-Property Relationships for Electrospun Dry Adhesives”. Dr. White described the bio-inspired research at University of Akron that kickstarted Akron Ascent Innovations and led to the development of ShearGrip technology. The talk also presented insights into the challenges involved in progressing from an application to a consumer adhesive product. The central focus on the talk was about how the structure of electrospun fibers affects performance, with illustrations provided from various generations of electrospun adhesive products. The conclusion of the talk was that work doesn’t end after perfecting a formulation — it evolves into new problems, many difficult to foresee, during scale-up. This is an aspect that is central to the start-up experience, and not often encountered or considered by researchers investigating new technologies.
Akron Ascent Innovations is a member of the American Chemical Society and aims to stay up to date and well versed in new and emerging technologies through networking. Being involved in the world’s largest scientific society helps AAI further advance the quality of people’s lives with the integration of science and chemistry.

AAI is a startup company based in Akron, OH that has developed a revolutionary new type of ultra-low tack, removable adhesives material made from nanofibers. This new class of materials is able to achieve a strong, but easily removable, bond between surfaces through nanoscale interactions. This approach to adhesion was inspired by nature and is widely used in the animal kingdom, including beetles, spiders, and geckos. AAI’s platform approach to dry adhesion can be used for a range of applications, ranging from temporary signage, home décor, wall hanging hooks, and picture frame tabs, to automotive assembly, packaging, smart clothing, electronics handling, and closures.
